LEED & Environmental Statement

Horton Automatics provides the following documentation in support of the LEED’s (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) project certification process:

MATERIALS & RESOURCES, MR Credit 4.1/4.2: Recycled Content

There are two types of recycled content: Pre-consumer and Post-consumer:

  • Pre-consumer content means that the scraps and materials that are leftover from the manufacturing process are reused in some way. Typically, this content is less environmentally beneficial since it indirectly encourages inefficient manufacturing processes that produce waste.
  • Post-consumer recycled content means material that, after going through its service life, can be disassembled, recycled or safely disposed of without adverse impacts on water, soil, or air. This type of recycled content is preferred and is used by Horton Automatics.

With respect to the percentage of recycled material used in our products, please note:

  • 30% percent of the value of every dollar shipped by Horton Automatics is aluminum and 50% of the aluminum is post-consumer recycled content.
Thus, for every $1,000 worth of Horton material in a given project, $150 ($1,000 x 0.3 x 0.5) or 15% is recycled value. The other components of our door systems (controls, power supplies, belt, hardware, etc.) have negligible recycled content.
  • It is important to note that in the case of manual systems, such as revolving and ICUs solutions, the aluminum content as a proportion of the total value is higher. In these cases, we estimate the recycled value to be 40-50% depending on the system. For manual systems, therefore, it is conservative to use 20% as recycled value.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY, EQ Credit 4.2: Paints & Coatings

The goal of Indoor Environmental Quality credit 4.2 is to reduce the exposure of building occupants and construction workers to irritating or harmful air contaminants. Many of the materials and products used in buildings give off gas volatile organic compounds (VOC).

Paints & coatings applied to interior metal must not exceed the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) content limits of
150 g/L established in Green Seal Standard GC-11, Paints & Coatings.

Powder Coat Paint

Fluoropolymer resin-based powder coatings that are electrostatically applied are preferred over liquid paint because they incorporate raw materials that are free of VOC and hazardous air pollutants. Horton Automatics utilizes 100% fluoropolymer resin-based powder coatings as an available paint finish for its products.

Anodized Aluminum Coatings

Anodized aluminum extrusions do not contain or produce a significant level of VOC’s. Horton Automatics provides a full range of anodized aluminum finishes for all its products.

LOCAL/REGIONAL MATERIALS, MR Credit 5.1/5.2:

  • Manufacturing location is Corpus Christi, TX
  • Source of aluminum is Delhi, LA

Horton Automatics trusts that the foregoing information helps you determine the contribution of Horton Automatics door systems to the USGBC LEED building rating of your structure.
